Poilievre Rally in Winnipeg Draws Thousands with Promise of Tax Cuts and Tough Talk on Crime

This is why it is important to vote and participate in the political process of all the parties—to ensure our voices are heard.

On March 29, 2025, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre drew thousands to a campaign rally in Winnipeg, energizing the crowd with a speech focused on cutting taxes, reducing tariffs, tackling crime, military spending and fighting what he called the "inflation tax." He launched pointed criticism at the Liberal government’s economic record, claiming that over the past ten years, Canadians had witnessed "a transfer of wealth from the have-nots to the have-yachts," with former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney becoming a convenient Liberal target.

Poilievre also mentioned Indigenous peoples once mentioning his intention to support healing and recovery centers like the Oak Centre. “We will invest in treatment and recovery,” he said, “where young people will be given counseling, detox, group therapy, physical therapy, yoga, and sweat lodges for First Nations.”

While the gesture may seem well-meaning, it risks reinforcing stereotypes that reduce Indigenous identity to cultural symbols like sweat lodges. First Nations are more than ceremonial practices. We have needs like all other Canadians: equitable access to healthcare, education, and clean water, as well as full implementation of Jordan’s Principle. We seek robust economic development opportunities, recognition of Indigenous governance, and a path forward that includes the abolition or complete overhaul of the Indian Act—not merely cultural nods during political rallies.

This is why it is important to vote and participate in the political process of all the parties—to ensure our voices are heard.
